The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of acute and chronic hyponatremia induced by vasopressin and its synthetic analogue desmopressin on the level of oxidative stress and eNOS gene expression in cerebral microvessels. The experiments were conducted on 105 male Wistar rats using two models of hyponatremia: acute (6 h) and chronic (4 days). Acute hyponatremia was induced by subcutaneous (s.c.) injection of vasopressin (AVP), a hormone involved in the pathogenesis of hyponatremia, or its synthetic analog desmopressin (dDAVP), combined with intraperitoneal (i.p.) water loading in the amount of 11% of body weight. Chronic hyponatremia was induced by continuous S. c. delivery of AVP or dDAVP using implanted ALZET mini-osmotic pumps, in combination with a liquid diet. The deposited data include: 1) osmolarity, sodium, chloride and copeptin concentrations in the blood of the studied animals, 2) data on staining of cerebral microvessels with dihydroethidium (DHE) to assess superoxide radical formation, 3) mRNA expression of endothelial (eNOS) and inducible (iNOS) isoforms of nitric oxide synthase in the cerebral microvessels, 4) nitrite concentrations in the plasma of the studied animals.
