The following report is the first attempt to model water runoff and sediment dynamics within the Tana River Basin-estuary system using the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) Model. It outlines the study area and its input datasets, such as DEM (Digital Elevation Model), land cover, soil data, meteorological data, hydrometric data, and the methodology employed for the delineation of watersheds, the generation of HRUs, flow simulation, and sediment-transport modelling.
The report examines the hydro-sedimentary processes typical to a snowmelt-dominated sub-Arctic river system such as precipitation, snow accumulation and snowmelt; surface and lateral subsurface runoff; water yield; river discharge; sediment yield; sediment concentration; and sediment transport. The results are provided for the periods 1998-2012 and 2013-2025 and for selected sub-basins of the Tana River Basin.
In addition, a calibration and validation overview is given using the hydrometric data from the Polmaknye, Alaköngäs, and Onnelansuvanto stations. The reported outputs serve as an initial basis for future modelling and assessment of organic carbon transport and possible integration of the SWAT-C/TASC (SWAT Carbon Module, now Terrestrial-Aquatic Sciences Convergence) model framework in the Tana River Basin–Estuary system.
