The dataset includes a complete set of graphical materials, tables, and experimental data used in the article “Study of SFCL Functionality in the Presence of Long-Duration Short Circuits”. The data concern investigations of the functionality of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) operating under long-duration short-circuit conditions. The dataset contains LVRT characteristics for selected national grid codes, voltage and current waveforms recorded during short-circuit current limitation by 2G HTS tapes, results of energy generated during the action of the surge current impulse, changes in the critical current value IC after repeated transitions of the tape into the resistive state, and SEM microstructural documentation confirming degradation of the superconducting tape layers.
The experimental data were obtained for SF12100-CF 2G HTS tapes manufactured by SuperPower with a 2 μm thick silver layer. The investigations were carried out in a liquid nitrogen bath at a temperature of 77 K. Voltage and current waveforms were recorded during the flow of current impulses with durations of 0.5 s, 1 s, and 2 s for different values of prospective short-circuit current and different voltage drop values across the tape. Based on the recorded waveforms, the energy generated in the HTS tape was determined, and the influence of short-circuit duration on the degradation of the superconducting properties of the tape was analysed.
The dataset also includes schematics of the measurement system, photographs of the experimental setup, the method of mounting HTS tape samples, characteristics of heat transfer between the HTS tape and liquid nitrogen, and SEM images showing degradation of the YBCO, Ag, and buffer layers after exposure to long-duration short circuits.
The measurements were performed using an IT7626 programmable voltage source, a Rohde & Schwarz RTB2004 digital oscilloscope, and a GMC-I Prosys CP1005 current probe. The microstructural analyses were performed using SEM.
The dataset may be used for analyses of the influence of long-duration short circuits on the degradation of HTS tapes used in SFCLs, modelling of superconducting fault current limiter operation in power systems, and studies related to LVRT requirements for renewable energy sources.
