This dataset contains measurement data acquired for a study investigating cerebral hemodynamic responses in the human head using diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) and blood oxygenation level–dependent magnetic resonance imaging (BOLD MRI). The purpose of the study was to evaluate how blood flow index (BFI) measured with continuous-wave DCS (cw-DCS) and time-domain DCS (td-DCS) corresponds to BOLD MRI signals during controlled respiratory challenges, and to assess the ability of these optical techniques to monitor hemodynamic changes in superficial and deeper tissue layers.
In vivo measurements were carried out on healthy adult volunteers during breath-hold (BH) and hyperventilation (HV) tasks. Datasets from 14 volunteers are included. During the measurements, volunteers lay in a supine position inside a 3T MRI scanner, with optical probes placed symmetrically on the left and right forehead, approximately 1 cm above the eyebrows. The BH paradigm consisted of two cycles of 90 s of normal breathing followed by 30 s of breath holding. The HV paradigm consisted of two cycles of 80 s of self-paced breathing followed by 40 s of hyperventilation. These respiratory challenges were used to induce changes in cerebral oxygenation and blood flow, enabling comparison of DCS-derived blood flow index with BOLD MRI responses.
The scope of the dataset supports validation and further analysis of DCS techniques as non-invasive, portable tools for monitoring cerebral haemodynamics, particularly in comparison with MRI-derived measures of blood oxygenation.
