This study provides a detailed investigation into the optical characteristics of colloidal gold nanoshells (NSs) with varying gold layer thicknesses and an additional silica coating. Our findings indicate that the spectral position of the localized plasmon resonance in NSs is highly sensitive to these parameters. Additionally, we observe that the silica layer plays a crucial role in enhancing the stability of colloidal systems. To complement our experimental results, we perform theoretical calculations that illustrate how absorption and scattering contribute to the overall extinction as a function of gold layer thickness. These calculations also shed light on the mechanisms behind spectral broadening in clustered NSs. Our results offer valuable insights for designing hybrid materials with applications in refractive-index sensing, metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF), and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS).
