This repository contains the data, statistical analyses, model equations, and experimental materials associated with the research reported in the manuscript entitled Cognitive Dissonance Reduction and Hindsight Bias as Explanations for the Choice-Induced Preference Change.

This research examined the cognitive processes underlying choice-induced preference change (CIPC), which is typically measured by the free-choice paradigm (FCP). The FCP presents a shift in preferences as the difference in desirability between chosen and rejected items spreads. We investigated whether the cognitive processes underlying cognitive dissonance (CD) reduction are analogous to those involved in hindsight bias (HB). Across two experiments, we assessed the shared latent processes underlying preference change in both frameworks, employing an adapted multinomial processing tree (MPT) model. Experiment 1 (N = 81), using travel destinations as choice options, indicated similarities in the cognitive processes underlying CD and HB. Experiment 2 (N = 227) replicated and extended these findings, using artwork stimuli and an instructional manipulation differentiating self-based judgments (CD) from third-person-perspective judgments (HB). Overall, the findings suggest that CIPC may reflect a broader knowledge-updating mechanism encompassing both CD and HB.
