The dataset brings together maps, charts, and photographic records used in the article Roman Coin Hoards in Eastern Europe. It documents the diversity of Roman coin hoards and related assemblages known from the eastern part of the European Barbaricum, with particular emphasis on present-day Ukraine, Belarus, and western Russia. The files illustrate different categories of deposits, including hoards of imperial denarii, sestertii, antoniniani, provincial issues, aurei, Late Roman bronze coins, siliquae, solidi, cast copies, and barbarian imitations. They also record associated artefacts and selected contexts that demonstrate the varied ways in which Roman coins were accumulated, deposited, reused, and combined with non-numismatic objects.
File 1 (fig. 1) illustrates four finds of soldered Roman denarii from Ukraine, interpreted as small hoards or compact groups of coins. The examples come from the Poltava, Vinnytsia, and Cherkasy regions, together with one assemblage of unknown provenance, and document a distinctive form of secondary modification of Roman silver coinage.
File 2 (fig. 2) is a chronological chart showing the number of recorded discoveries of Roman coins in Eastern Europe, including both hoards and individual finds, arranged by decade of discovery. The graph provides an overview of the changing intensity of coin-find registration and illustrates the strong influence of modern discovery and recording practices on the available archaeological record.
File 3 (fig. 3) presents a hoard from Myrhorod in the Poltava Region of Ukraine containing second-century Roman sestertii together with ornaments decorated in the champlevé enamel technique. The assemblage is an example of a mixed deposit in which Roman bronze coinage occurs alongside locally used or produced personal ornaments.
File 4 (fig. 4) brings together examples of hoards of Roman imperial denarii accompanied by other artefacts. The illustrated assemblages derive from Ukraine and the Bryansk Region of Russia and demonstrate that denarius hoards could form part of more complex deposits containing ornaments or other objects rather than representing exclusively monetary accumulations.
File 5 (fig. 5) maps the known distribution of hoards of Roman imperial denarii, sestertii, and cast copies of denarii. By presenting these categories separately, the map allows comparison of their geographical ranges and highlights differences in the concentration and circulation of various forms of Roman and Roman-inspired coinage in Eastern Europe.
File 6 (fig. 6) shows a hoard of Roman provincial bronze coins minted at Trapezus and discovered on the Arabat Spit in Crimea, Ukraine. This deposit represents a distinct category of coin hoarding connected with the circulation of provincial issues in the northern Black Sea region.
File 7 (fig. 7) presents the distribution of hoards containing antoniniani, Roman provincial coins, aurei, and gold-plated barbarian imitations. The map demonstrates that these categories formed different spatial patterns and reflects the regional diversity of Roman coin inflow and deposition across the eastern Barbaricum.
File 8 (fig. 8) illustrates ‘Assemblage 2’ from the Selysche burial ground in the Vinnytsia Region of Ukraine. The assemblage provides an example of Roman coinage occurring within a funerary or burial-related context and contributes to the study of non-monetary uses of Roman coins in local communities.
File 9 (fig. 9) presents the hoard of gold-plated barbarian imitations from Lipovets’ in the Vinnytsia Region. The find illustrates the production and accumulation of locally made imitations inspired by Roman precious-metal coinage and represents a particularly distinctive category of numismatic material from the eastern Barbaricum.
File 10 (fig. 10) maps hoards of Late Roman bronze coins, siliquae, and solidi. The comparison of these three categories illustrates the changing structure of Roman coin inflow during Late Antiquity and the different regional patterns associated with bronze, silver, and gold denominations.
File 11 (fig. 11) shows a hoard of Late Roman solidi from Bronnaja Hara in the Brest Region of Belarus. The deposit represents the circulation and accumulation of high-value Roman gold coinage beyond the imperial frontier and forms part of the wider pattern of Late Roman gold finds in Eastern Europe.
As a whole, the dataset provides comparative documentation for the study of Roman coin hoarding in Eastern Europe from the Roman Imperial period to Late Antiquity. It highlights the chronological, geographical, and functional diversity of the deposits and demonstrates that Roman coins in the region circulated not only as monetary objects, but also as raw material, ornaments, prestige goods, imitations, and components of mixed archaeological assemblages.
