This dataset contains data on mobility in Europe during COVID-19 pandemic, stringency, mortality, population density, trust in government and log-prices of brent oil.
We collected the data for two subsamples: October 2020 to March 2021 (file names starting with first_fall) and October 2021 to March 2022 (file names starting with scnd_fall) for the following mobility types:
- Workplace Mobility Index (WMI) tracks the number of visits to workplaces;
- Retail and Recreation Mobility Index (RRMI) covers the number of visits to restaurants, cafes, shopping centres, theme parks, museums, libraries, and movie theaters;
- Transit Stations Mobility Index (TSMI) measures the number of trips to public transport hubs, including subways, buses, and train stations;
- Residential Mobility Index (RMI) measures changes in the amount of time spent at home.
Each file contains the following variables:
- value: the value of the respective mobility index
- SI: data on stringency index (SI), obtained from the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker (OxCGRT) database (https://github.com/COVID19Tracking and https://github.com/OxCGRT/COVID-policy-tracker). The stringency index (SI) includes nine indicators of restrictions (i.e., school closure, workplace closure, cancellation of public events, public transport closure, public information campaigns, domestic traffic restrictions, and international travel controls) and ranges from 0 to 100.
- deaths: COVID-19 mortality (data source: https://github.com/COVID19Tracking and https://github.com/OxCGRT/COVID-policy-tracker) and presents the number of daily new confirmed COVID-19 deaths per million people.
- trust: Trust in Government Index (data source: https://data.oecd.org/gga/trust-in-government.htm)l This index, published by the OECD, reflects the percentage of citizens who express confidence in their national government. The OECD report identifies five key factors that influence trust in governments: reliability, responsiveness, integrity, openness, and fairness.
- unemployment: unemployment rate in a given country.
- density: population density in a given country.
- Brent: log-change of Europe Brent spot prices (expressed in USD per barrel) collected from the Thomson Reuters database.
- isHoliday: dummy indicating holidays time.
- isWeekend: dummy indicating weekends.
