The study investigates the selective oxidation of coniferyl alcohol, a lignin-derived compound, using a CuBi₂O₄/TiO₂ heterostructure under visible light (455 nm), combined with ultrasound in a continuous-flow system.
The CuBi₂O₄/TiO₂ catalyst showed the best photocatalytic performance, reaching 92% conversion, with selectivities of 46% for coniferyl aldehyde and 32% for ferulic acid after 4 hours. Combining ultrasound (22 kHz) with visible-light irradiation further enhanced the oxidation process, although product selectivity fluctuated over time.
Scavenger tests identified superoxide radicals (O₂•⁻) as the main reactive oxygen species. Overall, the study demonstrates the potential of combining sonication, photocatalysis, and continuous-flow processing for more efficient lignin valorization.
