Research data for the project "Innovative startups in Regional Innovation Systems in Italy: determinants of new firm formation".
The aim of the project was to assess the relationship between the level of development of RIS and start-up formation rates. The research was conducted with mixed methods. In the first stage, in-depth interviews were conducted, on the role of RIS in the formation of start-ups. In the second stage, we collected data on start-ups, on the RIS performance, as well as on general economic conditions of the regions.
Regarding the quantitative stage, we share a database, as well as code for statistical analysis in STATA (.do format and .txt format). The database combines data from ISTAT, Eurostat and Italian Chamber of Commerce. Data was merged based on a variable – region name. We provide it in STATA .dta format, as well as an open xlsx file.
The following variables are included:
⁃ Population in production age – 2019 (ISTAT)
⁃ Average unemployment rate 2013-2019 (ISTAT)
⁃ Average GDPpc 2013-2019 (ISTAT)
⁃ Institutional trust 2016 (ISTAT)
⁃ Interpersonal trust 2019 (ISTAT)
⁃ Cumulative number of startups (2013-03.2020) (Italian Chamber of Commerce)
⁃ Cumulative number of startups in medium-high and high-tech industries (2013-03.2020) (Italian Chamber of Commerce)
⁃ Full set of indicators of the innovation performance (Eurostat / Regional Innovation Scoreboard 2019 report)
In terms of qualitative data, we provide the interview scenario and basic information on the interviewed informants and their organisations. Respecting the confidentiality of the data collected through the interviews and the anonymity of the informants, we do not share interview transcripts.
