16 environmental samples were collected in the Pamir Mountains. All samples were collected at elevations ranging from 3,700 to 4,350 m above sea level from small water bodies in thermokarst areas and from freshwater spring basins in the eastern Pamir, near lakes Sassykkul, Khargush, Chukurkul, Tuzkul, Rangkul, Bulunkul, and the Akkul River. The samples were collected in August 2014 and consisted of a 1-2 cm surface layer of sediments with specific microbial communities characterized by a characteristic blue-green color or visible biofilm. Water temperature during sampling ranged from 6.9 to 25 degrees Celsius. DNA was isolated from these samples and subjected to metagenomic sequencing. Amplification was performed using the Illumina MiSeq platform (2×250 bp, ~1–1.5 million reads per sample), and metagenomic amplification was performed using the HiSeq 4000 Illumina platform (2 x 150 bp, ~6 Gb reads data per sample).
