Replication package for: Wroński, M., "Was State Socialism More Equal? Poland and the East–West Inequality Gap", Economic Systems. The package reconstructs the annual distribution of per capita income across Polish households in 1957–1992 from the published grouped tabulations of the Household Budget Survey (Badania Budżetów Gospodarstw Domowych, GUS). It contains: - the transcribed HBS tabulations: national distributions for 1957–1992 and distributions for socio-economic groups (workers, worker-peasants, farmers, pensioners) from 1978; - the reconstructed annual series: Gini, Theil and Atkinson indices, income shares of the bottom 50%, middle 40%, top 10% and top 1%, percentile ratios, Gini coefficients by socio-economic group and the Theil decomposition; - comparator data used in the paper: Lakner–Milanovic World Panel Income Distribution (1988) and World Inequality Database (1985); - Python code that reproduces all figures and supplementary tables of the paper, together with the resulting figures and tables.
The tabulations count households; no individual survey records are included. All the Ginis (Milanovic, 2016 version) is not redistributed; README.txt explains how to download it.
